Presenters will discuss collaborative work led by the Ash Protection Collaboration Across Waponahkik (APCAW) at the 91±¬ÁÏ and Tribal partners to document genetic diversity in brown ash populations\, collect and store seed for long-term conservation\, and harvest basket-quality trees before widespread mortality occurs. The session will also explore how these efforts support both ecological resilience and the continuation of Wabanaki basketmaking traditions\, and how landowners can participate by helping identify brown ash stands for sampling\, seed collection\, and harvest.\n\nRegister here URL:/apcaw/event/maine-woodland-owners-apcaw-webinar/ ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/jpeg:/apcaw/wp-content/uploads/sites/668/2026/04/MWO.jpeg END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/New_York:20260416T090000 DTEND;TZID=America/New_York:20260416T133000 DTSTAMP:20260521T162344 CREATED:20260309T143747Z LAST-MODIFIED:20260309T143747Z UID:10000063-1776330000-1776346200@umaine.edu SUMMARY:SAP-Ne Demonstration Site Tour: Bud Leavitt Wildlife Management Area DESCRIPTION:Cultivating Ash Resilience Across the Landscape — A Webinar and Field Walk Learning Series   \nRegister for the field tour \nApril 16th\, 2026\n9:00 – 1:00 p.m. ET \nBud Leavitt WMA Route 15\, Charleston\, ME 04422 (coordinates will be sent to registrants) \nAgenda  \nExperience the concepts from our silviculture webinar—and more—brought to life in the Maine woods. During our SAP-Ne Demonstration Site Field Tour\, you’ll explore on-the-ground management\, monitoring\, and decision-making within a pre-invasion forest at the Bud Leavitt Wildlife Management Area. SAP-Ne is proud to support the thoughtful ash management at Bud Leavitt and a growing network of demonstration sites\, designed to showcase effective\, hands-on techniques for stewarding ash trees and preserving future generations of ash in the face of emerald ash borer. Learn more by visiting the Sap-Ne website.   \nOur Field Tour Will:  \n\nIntroduce the approaches to preserving ash and promoting ash regeneration implemented by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (Maine IF&W)  \nExplore the ash silvicultural practices\, insecticide treatments\, and monitoring efforts at Budd Leavitt   \nDiscuss decision-making for ash preservation practices at a site slated for future management  \nCreate a casual atmosphere to network with your community over a provided lunch and casual conversation in the woods  \n\nSpeakers from Maine’s Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife:   \n\nJack Chappen\, Land Management Forester II  \nKate Locke\, Land Management Forester  \n\nAbout the Series:   \nCultivating Ash Resilience Across the Landscape starts with an online webinar to learn silvicultural strategies and explore case studies from the Northeast\, then takes us into the Maine woods for this guided field tour at the Bud Leavitt Wildlife Management Area to see ash stewardship in action. We are currently in a limited window of time before ash mortality is widespread and it may no longer be possible to collect genetic material from living trees. We have an opportunity to preserve genetic diversity for research\, resistance breeding\, and restoration efforts through a seed collection effort across Vermont and beyond in 2026.  \nPlease join Smokey House Center on Monday\, April 27th for a day of Ash Conservation learning and seed collection skill building. This event is offered in partnership with Vermont Land Trust\, Vermont Forest Parks and Recreation\, NorthWoods Stewardship Center\, Intervale Center\, Forest Stewards Guild Sustaining Ash Partnership Network\, and the Ecological Research Institute. This project is made possible with funding from the NSF Science and Technology Research Initiative for the Vermont Economy (STRIVE) program.  \nThis event is for folks who are interested in learning how to conserve ash species through seed collection and other practices. No prior experience is required\, but these skills will be most valuable to people who are in the position to collect seed multiple times this fall and throughout the coming years. Teachers and community leaders who may offer a seed collection unit\, land trust stewards or extension professionals who regularly work with landowners\, and state and consulting foresters are key constituencies in this work. If you think this workshop is for you\, you are right! We just ask that folks who attend be serious about taking action. \nThere will be a combination of indoor/seated activities in the morning and a field tour in the afternoon. Please contact rose@smokeyhouse.org if you need any accommodations and we will do our best. SAF credits will be available. \nFunding statement: This project is supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant Number 2438168.
