SUMMARY:2026 Student Exhibition in Lord Hall Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Lord Hall Gallery is proud to host the Department of Art鈥檚 2026 Student Exhibition. This show celebrates the diverse artwork made by students at the 91爆料 who have taken undergraduate courses in the Department of Art. The Department of Art offers foundational studies in 2D Design\, 3D Design\, and Drawing\, as well as media-specific classes in Painting\, Ceramics\, Photography\, Printmaking\, Digital Art\, Graphic Design\, Drawing\, and Sculpture. More information about the Department is available here:umaine.edu/las/art. \nStudents who were enrolled in an Art class in Fall 2025 and Spring 2026 had the opportunity to submit up to six pieces for consideration in this juried exhibition. This year鈥檚 juror is Rochelle Lawrence. Lawrence is an artist and serves as the Assistant Curator and Education Coordinator at the Zillman Art Museum. \nThe exhibition runs from April 6th through May 1st. A public reception will be held on Friday April 10th from 5:00-7:00pm. During the reception\, selected students will be honored with awards. This event is free and open to the public; all are warmly welcomed to attend and refreshments will be served. \nLord Hall Gallery is free\, accessible\, and open to the public Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm. SUMMARY:AI\, data science\, and medical care - Perspectives from the National Eye Institute
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER TODAY\nTuesday\, April 7 from 12:30 鈥� 2 p.m.\nMinsky Recital Hall and on YouTube\n\n\nClinical practice and research are rapidly evolving due to advances in artificial intelligence and data science. This talk highlights efforts at the National Eye Institute to address these changes and shares lessons for the broader scientific and medical communities. Topics include an overview of NEI\, the potential of imaging and AI to improve care (with pediatric retinal disease as an example)\, key challenges to adoption and NIH initiatives to address them\, and emerging trends shaping the future of clinical care\, research\, and education.聽\n\nAbout the speaker\nDr. Michael F. Chiang聽is Director of the National Eye Institute. By background\, he is a pediatric ophthalmologist and is also board-certified in clinical informatics. His research focuses on the interface of biomedical informatics and clinical ophthalmology in areas such as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)\, telehealth\, artificial intelligence\, electronic health records\, data science\, and genotype-phenotype correlation. He is an Adjunct Investigator at the National Library of Medicine\, and his group has published over 250 peer-reviewed papers and developed an assistive artificial intelligence system for ROP that received Breakthrough Status from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.\n\nAbout the workshop\nThis distinguished lecture is presented by the 91爆料鈥檚聽Office of the Vice President for Research and Maine College of Engineering and Computing.聽The 91爆料 System is an equal opportunity institution committed to nondiscrimination.

SUMMARY:Oxford County Winter School Series: Identifying and Managing Invasive Plants
DESCRIPTION:Join the 91爆料 Cooperative Extension for聽Oxford County Winter School for Farmers\, Homesteaders\, and Gardeners\, a seasonal learning series designed to support small farms\, homesteads\, and home gardeners across Oxford County and beyond. \nEach two-hour session聽features an engaging presentation followed by聽Q&A and discussion. The series includes both Zoom and in-person sessions to provide flexible participation options. \nTerrestrial Invasive Plant ID\, Ecology & Spread; the Importance of Early Detection & Rapid Response; and iMapInvasives聽will introduce people to the common invasive plants in Oxford County; how to identify them and how to remove them. We will raise awareness on invasive plant ecology\, how they spread on the landscape\, and the impacts they have on the landscape to ecosystem services\, native plants\, and food web dynamics. \nWe will also highlight the importance of early detection/rapid response (EDRR)\, the EDRR species invading forests in Maine\, and do a brief introduction on iMap invasives 鈥� a citizen science mapping tool and a central repository for invasive plant data in Maine. SUMMARY:Tractor Safety Certification Course - Gorham
DESCRIPTION:This 5-week course starts on聽April 7th聽at聽Cherry Hill Shaw Farm聽in Gorham\, ME. \nParticipants will learn how to handle tractors and equipment safely\, how to identify hazards\, and how to minimize the chances of accidents. The course is open to all adults and youth interested. A Federal Certificate of Training will be issued at the end of the course after successful completion of the written test and driving course and with attendance requirements met. This certificate is required for 14 and 15 year olds who plan to operate farm equipment for hire on farms other than their own. \nFormat: \n\nIn-person lectures\, hands-on demonstrations\, and tractor driving.\nAdditional reading and coursework outside of class time. DESCRIPTION:This webinar will explore Waldo County Bounty鈥檚 Give and Take program\, a stigma-free model for sharing surplus garden produce through community drop-off sites. Participants will learn how the program operates\, how new sites are selected\, and how to start a Give and Take site in their own community. Vi帽a was involved with launching Waldo County Bounty and the 鈥淕ive and Take鈥� program. She lives in Lincolnville where she enjoys growing food with her family and sharing the bounty with her community. \nMattie John Bamman (he/him) serves as the communications coordinator for Waldo County Bounty\, a nonprofit organization that he cofounded during the pandemic to increase access to locally grown fruits and vegetables. Mattie has participated in the development of WCB programming\, including the Farm-to-Pantry\, Seedling-to-Pantry\, Veggies For All Gleaning\, and Give & Take Stand programs\, which seek to support food insecure individuals and farms to strengthen the Waldo County food system. He is also a homesteader who grew up as part of the Downeast back-to-the-land movement\, and has 20+ years of international food writing experience.
