To analyze the effectiveness of inflation in the regime of large\, non-perturbative fluctuations\, we perform numerical relativity simulations using a custom tetrad-based formulation of the Einstein-scalar field equations with a plateau-shaped potential. Based on gauge-invariant diagnostic variables\, we find that inflation can only smooth nearly-Friedmann-Robertson-Walker initial conditions beginning at the Planck energy scale. In these simulations\, we observe that the unbounded growth of fluctuations鈥攑articularly those in gravitational shear density and curvature鈥攊s a generic effect in these models that tends to dominate over the potential energy and prevent inflation from occurring. As a result\, the parameter space of initial conditions at the Planck density that inflation can smooth must be heavily restricted\, rendering inflation a rare phenomenon. College-bound high school juniors who plan to take the SAT test will benefit from learning about the new format and updated content of the new SAT. \n鈥淚 am actually a fan of the new SAT\,鈥 says Dr. Smyth. She explained the test is shorter (2 hours 15 minutes total) and questions are individualized to each student. The digital approach allows the test to 鈥渞eact鈥 to the student鈥檚 prior answers and change the difficulty level. The reading passages are shorter and there is a combined section with both reading and grammar questions included. The test also has a visible built-in timer and a calculator and graphing program available for all the math questions. \nThe new test will require a whole new approach to studying and practicing. While there are free resources available on Khan Academy\, most students will need guidance in understanding how to approach the test. For instance\, students can attempt a math problem by using any of several techniques: graph the problem\, write out the algebra steps\, or try the answers to see which one fits. Knowing how to navigate between those options will give students more strategies and can increase their scores. \n鈥淲ith this new SAT format\, I am amazed how much teaching I can do to help students solidify knowledge they have been exposed to in high school\, 鈥 says Smyth. 鈥淪tudents have to be able to use what they have learned to solve problems. That is the name of the game in the SAT.鈥 \nDr. Mary Smyth鈥檚 SAT Boot Camp has been used successfully to prepare students to take the SAT for many years. Students attend class every day during a school vacation week and practice taking short sections of the test. Students are relaxed and well-rested\, so they are able to absorb the lessons and practice at their best. \nProgram Benefits\nUsing lessons that she writes herself\, Smyth has helped many students through their own hard work improve their SAT scores by 100-200 points. \nWho Should Enroll\nCollege-bound high school juniors who plan to take the SAT test. \nProgram Details\nInstructor\nDr. Mary Smyth \nEducation:\nA.B. These emerging zoonotic diseases are integrated into landscapes managed by people and amplified in complex cycles in which pathogen transmission is intertwined with ecosystem ecology and human behavior. Many management decisions at the human-wildlife-environmental health nexus are made under conditions of both risk (i.e.\, potential for negative outcomes) and uncertainty (due to imperfect\, evolving scientific knowledge). However\, both accurate and approximate DNNs remain inherently vulnerable to faults and adversarial attacks\, and the reliability and adversarial robustness of approximate DNNs remain largely unexplored. This gap presents an opportunity to rethink how we design sustainable and dependable AI hardware. In this seminar\, I will discuss our recent advances in post-fabrication fault mitigation methods and the principled selection of hardware approximation techniques to preserve adversarial robustness under attack. I will highlight how we leverage emerging computing paradigms\, such as explainable artificial intelligence\, neural architecture search\, moving target defense\, and neuromorphic computing\, to ensure reliability\, security\, and energy efficiency. This seminar outlines a path toward AI hardware that is not only high-performing and energy-aware but also resilient against both hardware faults and security threats. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
