Thus\, understanding and controlling these properties is essential for their integration into\nfuture electronic and energy-efficient technologies. In this presentation\, representative results\nare obtained by using advanced surface-sensitive experimental approaches that enable the\ninvestigation of 2D materials\, such as graphene\, germanene\, and transition metal\nchalcogenides\, at the atomic scale. Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) is employed to\nprobe and locally manipulate structural and electronic properties with atomic precision\, while\ncomplementary synchrotron-based techniques offer element-specific and surface-resolved\naccess to electronic structure\, chemical states\, and interfacial phenomena. The results\ndemonstrate how lattice registry\, MoirĂ© superstructures\, interfacial coupling\, and local structural\ndistortions strongly influence the electronic landscape of 2D systems\, leading to spatial\nmodulations of charge density\, work function\, and local density of states. Local nano-contacts\ncreated by STM further reveal how mechanical deformation and layer decoupling can be used\nto tune charge injection and junction behavior at the nanoscale. By combining photoemission\nspectroscopy\, polarization-dependent x-ray absorption\, electron diffraction\, and first-principles\ncalculations\, our studies separate the roles of structural asymmetry and electronic orbital\ncharacter in driving anisotropic electronic responses and how intrinsic properties can be\ncontrolled. Overall\, these findings highlight the critical role of surfaces\, interfaces\, and local\nstructural effects in shaping the electronic behavior of 2D materials\, offering new pathways for\ntheir controlled manipulation in future nanoscale and quantum technologies. From seasonal rhythms and market demand to labor\, climate challenges\, and community networks\, the presentation highlights both the opportunities and pressures shaping local flower farms today. Through images and stories from the field\, attendees will gain a deeper appreciation for the people\, places\, and systems behind Maine-grown flowers.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Dr. Ankit K Singh: Dr. Ankit Kumar Singh is an Assistant Extension Professor with the 91±¬ÁĎ Cooperative Extension whose work centers on specialty crop production\, controlled environment agriculture\, and community-based food systems. Through extensive engagement with flower growers across Maine\, his research and outreach explore the realities of farming in northern climates\, from seasonality and labor to markets and climate resilience. In parallel\, Dr. Singh collaborates on space-agriculture research\, examining how insights from extreme growing environments from greenhouses in Maine to plant systems designed for space can inform the future of sustainable farming on Earth. \n\nRegistration required.
