As the filmmakers put it\, ā€œUsing just-discovered archival footage\, and focusing on the stories of six individuals\, viewers are transported to those heady days\, when private businesses could choose their customers\, and the walls between Black and white were so high that friendships were unimaginable.ā€ \nThe film\, which has been hailed by the DC Black Film and the Boston Jewish Film Festivals among many others\, is both an essential record of a shared history too often forgotten and an occasion for bringing communities together for dialogue and tikkun olam. The film also has a local connection with Helene Wilson\, of blessed memory\, and sister of Arnold Berleant\, who features prominently. \nTo facilitate community dialogue\, the screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with a ā€œwho’s whoā€ of Maine Civil Rights Leaders\, including Rachel Talbot Ross\, Michael Alpert\, and Athena Witham. They will be joined by an American historian from the 91±¬ĮĻ faculty to lead a discussion of the film and its lessons for us today. We are thrilled to welcome pianist Jonathan Biss back to the BSO stage to perform Johannes Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2. Complementing the Brahms on the program will be two rarely heard masterpieces\, the Donna Diana Overture by Emil vonĀ ReznicekĀ and the Symphony in B-flat by Ernest Chausson. \nOne reason for curating these particular works together for our season opener is their shared common key tonality (the Chausson and Brahms are both in B-flat); I also find it fascinating that all three pieces on the program were composed within less than 15 years of each other and in close geographical proximity (Reznicek\, Austria – 1894\, Chausson\, France – 1890\, Brahms\, Germany – 1881) but each is wildly different in its compositional approach: theĀ ReznicekĀ elicits Italian opera\, the Chausson embraces Wagnerian harmonies\, and the Brahms seems very connected to the Austria of Schubert. That divergence of intent is\, perhaps\, these works’ uniting feature: each shares a sense of itchy feet\, wanting to reach outside of their home and take us on a journey abroad. \nProgram \nEmil Nikolaus von ReznicekĀ  |Ā Ā Donna Diana: Overture\nErnest ChaussonĀ  |Ā Ā Symphony in B-flat\, Op. 20\nJohannes BrahmsĀ  |Ā Ā Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major\, Op. 83\nJonathan Biss\, piano \nAbout the Guest Artist: \nPianistĀ JONATHAN BISSĀ is recognized globally for his ā€œimpeccable taste and a formidable techniqueā€ (The New Yorker) and has appeared as a soloist with some of the world’s foremost orchestras\, including the Los Angeles and New York Philharmonics\, the Boston Symphony\, Royal Concertgebouw\, London Symphony and more. Biss is also the author of ā€˜Unquiet: My Life with Beethoven’\, in which he examines music and his own life ā€˜s journey through the lens of Beethoven’s last piano sonatas.
