SUMMARY:Math Colloquium - Thompson's group F and geometric group theory
DESCRIPTION:Mathematics Colloquium\nSpeaker: Professor Sean Cleary\, The City College of New York and the CUNY Graduate Center \nAbstract: In the early 1960’s Richard J. Thompson discovered a fascinating family of infinite groups in connection with his work in logic. These groups have reappeared in a wide variety of settings\, including homotopy theory\, measure theory of discrete groups\, non-associative algebras\, dynamical systems\, and geometric group theory. Geometric group theory considers infinite groups as geometric objects\, and has been productive in bring tools modeled on differential geometry notions to the discrete settings of countably infinite groups. Thompson’s group F is the simplest known example of a variety of unusual group-theoretic phenomena and has been the subject of a great deal of study. I will describe these groups from several different perspectives and discuss some of their remarkable properties\, particularly some unusual aspects of the geometry of their Cayley graphs.

SUMMARY:Growing Seven Months of Cut Flowers: Seed Starting to Harvesting Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join Jason Aucoin of Back Cover Flowers for an in-depth look at how to grow cut flowers continuously from early spring through fall. Jason will walk participants through his full growing season\, from seed starting and succession planting to harvesting.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA Master Gardener Volunteer since 2009\, Jason has spent the past seven years co-owning and operating a diverse micro cut-flower farm in Portland’s Back Cove neighborhood. Farming on just a quarter acre\, he grows thousands of stems each season and sells his flowers directly to the community through his weekend farm stand on Ocean Avenue in Portland. \nThis webinar is ideal for home gardeners\, aspiring flower farmers\, and anyone curious about maximizing flower production in a small space. DESCRIPTION:Accompanying the 2026 Faculty Exhibition will be weekly programing called The Mindful Eye. Each Friday from 11-12:30 (February 6\, 13\, 20\, 27\, March 6\, 13)\, the Gallery will offer slow looking exercises\, yoga\, meditation\, and pranayama (breathwork) using the artwork on display as a tool for mindfulness. These events are free and open to all. The Mindful Eye is generously supported by the Alton ’38 and Adelaide Hamm Campus Activities Fund.

SUMMARY:2026 Faculty Exhibition Reception in Lord Hall Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Lord Hall Gallery is pleased to announce the 2026 Faculty Exhibition\, running from February 2-March 20\, 2026. A public reception will take place on February 13 from 5:00-7:00pm. Please join us to meet the artists and celebrate their work. \nThe exhibition includes current and emeritus faculty from 91±¬ÁĎ’s Department of Art and the IMFA program: Diana Baumbach\, Louise Bourne\, Tim Conte\, Samantha Jones\, James Linehan\, Andy Mauery\, and Susan Smith. A diverse range of artwork will be on view including digital photography\, installation\, painting\, mixed media\, and more. Faculty exhibitions are presented on alternating years and each exhibition showcases approximately half of the studio art faculty. \nLord Hall Gallery is located on the first floor of Lord Hall and is open Monday-Friday from 9:00am-4:00pm. Events are free\, accessible\, and open to the public. All are welcome.
