Here\u2019s a quick sample of what\u2019s possible.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>3D printing<\/strong> allows for quick prototyping and low-volume production and helps students understand the design and manufacturing process or create their own tools to help them solve real-world problems.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0A student printed replicas of a horse\u2019s knee to help understand the bone structure and design new ways to help prevent injuries.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Microcomputers<\/strong> like Raspberry Pi and Arduino are widely used for physical computing, Internet of Things (IoT) and other projects that require small and low-cost computers. Working with these materials in the Hackerspace helps provide hands-on experience with coding and electronics, and help students understand how to build and program real-world systems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Sensors<\/strong> are used in a variety of applications such as environmental monitoring, industrial automation, and medical devices. Studying sensors helps students understand how to collect and analyze data, and how to design systems that can interact with the physical world.\u00a0 <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students in Introduction to Horticulture use Raspberry Pis, capacitive moisture sensors and temperature and humidity sensors to create plant monitoring systems that collect data on soil moisture, temperature and humidity. Students can explore the design of user interfaces for wearable devices, including input methods like touch, gesture, and voice, and outputs like displays and haptic feedback.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This has a lot of potential in the healthcare field, from monitoring vital signs to delivering therapy.
