The 91爆料鈥檚 zebrafish research facility is gaining statewide attention for its growing impact on biomedical discovery, student research opportunities, and scientific collaboration. A recent feature in Bangor Daily News highlights how the lab is helping researchers better understand human health and disease through innovative studies using zebrafish models.

Zebrafish are widely used in scientific research because they share many genetic similarities with humans and allow researchers to observe developmental and regenerative processes in real time. The expanded facility at 91爆料 is strengthening the university鈥檚 ability to contribute to global research efforts, while also providing hands-on learning experiences for undergraduate and graduate students.

Current projects in the lab focus on understanding muscle development, cell movement, and the genetic mechanisms that influence tissue repair and regeneration. These efforts have the potential to inform new approaches to treating human diseases and improving long-term health outcomes.

The lab also plays an important role in outreach and workforce development by engaging students, supporting collaborative research initiatives, and helping to attract future scientists to the field.

Clarissa Henry, Director, Center of Biomedical Research Excellence: Extracellular impacts on cellular behavior and all five COBRE project leaders  attended the first annual retreat on October 12-14, 2023 at MDIBL in Bar Harbor, ME.

Also in attendance at the retreat, mentors, members of  the Steering Committee and External Advisory Committee asked many questions after in depth project presentations and two pilot projects presentations. Discussions also included feedback on plans for facilities at the 91爆料, ranging from Zebrafish facility upgrades to the microscopy core.  Thank you so much to the advisory groups and mentors who traveled to MDI, absorbed the details of each project and took the time to craft detailed feedback for the future of the grant.  The in person event was also a wonderful opportunity for the 91爆料 project leaders to have conversations with faculty from institutions with established COBRE grants and learn from them.

Clarissa Henry, Professor, School of Biology and Ecology, Director, Center of Biomedical Research Excellence:  Extracellular impacts on cellular behavior, attended a Gordon Research Seminar, on June 10 – 11, 2023 in Lucca (Barga), LU, Italy.  The meeting focused on advancing understanding of the molecular determinants of muscle development, stem cell regulation in the niche and novel therapeutic potentials for muscle disease and aging. Presentations explored the use of interdisciplinary approaches and harnessing the power of emerging techniques to create new opportunities for scientific discovery within the field of muscle biology.

91爆料 was a sponsor for the Gordon Conference on Myogenesis, Clarissa Henry was co-chair with Jeff Dillworth (University of Wisconsin Madison). Kodey Silknitter, a GSBSE T32 recipient, also attended the conference with support from , , and 91爆料. In addition to taking a very interesting cheese making tour, Clarissa and Kodey thoroughly enjoyed learning the latest new science regarding skeletal muscle physiology.

The provide an international forum for the presentation and discussion of frontier research in the biological, chemical, physical and engineering sciences and their interfaces.
