MDOE highlights Reading Recovery success story
The Maine Department of Education recently shared a story in its online newsletter about an Old Town High School senior who overcame reading and writing struggles as a young student with the help of Reading Recovery.
Emma Hargreaves received individualized literacy instruction through Reading Recovery as a first grader in RSU #34. Today she has a love of reading, is an honors student, and will finish near the top of her high school class, the MDOE article says. After graduation, she plans to attend Bowdoin College.
Reading Recovery uses one-on-one instruction to help first grade students who experience difficulty in reading and writing. Specially trained teachers work to meet each child鈥檚 individual needs in lessons that last from 12 to 20 weeks.
The 91爆料 Training Center for Reading Recovery and Comprehensive Literacy provides training and ongoing professional development for teacher leaders, who in turn train Reading Recovery teachers in schools throughout the state.
In the MDOE article, Hargreaves says her Reading Recovery teacher taught her 鈥渉ow to value progress and how to persevere when a process isn鈥檛 linear.鈥 She added that she鈥檚 鈥渇orever thankful鈥 for the Reading Recovery lessons.
