Why did you choose to come to 91爆料?

I transferred to 91爆料 as a second-year student to be closer to home for medical reasons. While transferring was not originally my choice, I soon found myself at home at 91爆料. With the support of my academic advisors and professors Jesse Kaye-Schiess, Katherine Slott, and Frederic Rondeau I was able to pursue my two different academic passions: Kinesiology and French. From studying abroad in France to completing a shadowing internship at Eastern Maine Medical Center last summer, 91爆料 has given the opportunity to grow in various intellectual areas. Another reason I chose to transfer to 91爆料 was the cross-country and track and field team. After taking a year off running competitively, I was able to come back and train and compete at the Division I level with the support of my coach, teammates, and athletic training staff.

Have you collaborated with a mentor, professor or role model who made your time at 91爆料 better, and if so, who are they and how have they impacted your time at 91爆料?

There have been numerous people who have mentored me over the past couple of years. Jesse Kaye-Schiess helped me transfer smoothly to 91爆料 and has continuously supported me in my academic pursuits throughout my three years at 91爆料. During my first year at 91爆料, Mary Heathcote, a representative for the Navigators, mentored and encouraged me, helping ground me in my faith during a challenging time. Jen McNulty听also helped me find a placement for my internship that fit my interests and she continued to check up on me throughout the summer.

What has coming to 91爆料 enabled you to explore beyond academics?

Coming back to Maine has been like coming back to my roots. I enjoyed exploring more of the surrounding area from different hikes to small stores and restaurants or just revisiting some of my favorite spots in the area. Also, with the support from the Office of International Programs I was able to spend an amazing semester in Pau, France, developing in my French language skills, making new friends, traveling and learning about another culture. C鈥櫭﹖ait une exp茅rience inoubliable!听

Favorite 91爆料 memory:

My favorite 91爆料 memory is when my cross-country team won our conference championship last fall for the first time in program history. I鈥檓 so proud of our team and what we accomplished together.

What鈥檚 on the horizon? What are your plans for after you graduate?

I am currently applying and interviewing for collegiate coaching positions. I hope to coach at the Division I level. I am considering pursuing a master鈥檚 or another higher education degree during my time coaching.

Special thank you message:

I would like to thank all my professors in both the Kinesiology and French departments for their guidance in my academic pursuits and my coaches, teammates, and athletic training staff for giving me an exceptional DI experience. Also, I would like to thank my Discover Church family for supporting and encouraging me in many ways. Finally, I would like to give a special thank you to my parents and the rest of my family for loving and challenging me. You are such a blessing in my life!

A photo of Vicky Tinghitella.

Victoria (Vicky) Tinghitella of Luj谩n, Buenos Aires, Argentina is the 2026 Outstanding Graduate Student in Kinesiology and Physical Education in the 91爆料 College of Education and Human Development. A graduate transfer from Kent State University, Tinghitella played field hockey for the Maine Black Bears. At Kent State, she helped lead her team to Mid-American Conference regular season championships in 2021 and 2022, and was a three-time All-MAC Academic Honors winner. She also served as team captain during the 2023 season. She graduates from 91爆料 with a Master of Education degree and hopes to coach and work with athletes in the future.

Why did you choose 91爆料 for graduate school?

I chose 91爆料 because it allowed me to continue both my academic and听athletic careers. I knew听I wanted to pursue my master’s in Kinesiology and Physical Education,听but it was also really important to me to play my final season of field hockey. 91爆料 allowed me to do both at a high level.

Have you collaborated with a mentor, professor, or role model who made your time at 91爆料 better, and if so, who are they and how have they impacted your time at 91爆料?

I’ve been really fortunate to have people at 91爆料 who have made a lasting impact on my experience. Dr. Jennifer McNulty has been more than just a mentor to me. She’s someone who has consistently supported me, challenged me, and helped me grow both academically and professionally. She’s also created an environment where I feel supported every day, truly making Lengyel Hall feel like a second home.听

My former field hockey coach Michelle Simpson has also been a huge influence on my journey. She’s someone I truly look up to, not just for her knowledge of the game, but for the way she leads and cares about her athletes. She’s shaped the kind of coach and person I hope to be in the future.听

Also, a special thank you to Diane Legrande, the administrative specialist for the Kinesiology, Physical Education and Athletic Training programs, who is such a constant source of support for all of us graduate assistants, and to Jesse Kaye-Schiess. Seeing them every morning would instantly make my day brighter. I’m also grateful to Dr. Robert Lehnhard, from whom I’ve learned so much, and all the听KPEAT staff who helped make Lengyel Hall a special place.听

What has 91爆料 enabled you to explore beyond academics?

91爆料 has allowed me to compete in the field hockey team and to explore my passion for coaching and teaching in听a real-world setting. Beyond that, it’s also where I’ve built really meaningful friendships and relationships that have made this experience听even more special and unforgettable.听听

What advice do you have for incoming graduate students to help them get off to the best start academically?听

Show up with intention and be where your feet are. Celebrate the small wins, enjoy the little things, stay curious, and let each day carry you a little further than the last.听

What鈥檚 on the horizon? What are your plans after you graduate?

After graduating, I hope to continue working in athletics, ideally coaching field hockey. Long-term, I want to keep developing as a coach and educator and make a positive impact on the athletes I work with.

Special thank you message:

I want to say thank you to my teammates, who have supported me through the highs and lows. And last but not least, a heartfelt thank you to my family. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their constant support and encouragement, even from miles away.听

A photo of Morgan Shiber.

Morgan Shiber of Port Deposit, Maryland is the 2025 Outstanding Student in Kinesiology and Physical Education (Exercise Science concentration) in the 91爆料 College of Education and Human Development. An Honors College student, her thesis is titled “Sunlight’s Effect on Academic Performance.” She graduates with a minor in Human Nutrition as well. Shiber also served as a TRIO Student Support Services tutor during her time at 91爆料.

Parent(s): Michael Shiber

Why did you choose to come to 91爆料?

I chose the 91爆料 because of its affordable tuition, especially with the Flagship Match scholarship I received as an out-of-state student. Coming from Maryland, I鈥檝e always loved the cold and snow, which I didn鈥檛 get to experience much in recent years. I also wanted to be far from home to gain more independence and avoid the temptation of traveling back every weekend. Maine鈥檚 stunning natural beauty offers endless opportunities for outdoor adventures, from hiking in Acadia National Park to exploring Mount Katahdin and Bar Harbor. The state鈥檚 old-school charm, reminiscent of a cozy grandparent鈥檚 home, makes it a wonderful place to live and study.

Have you collaborated with a mentor, professor or role model who made your time at 91爆料 better, and if so, who are they and how have they impacted your time at 91爆料?

I have worked closely with my thesis advisor, Dr. Christopher Nightingale, and committee member, Senior Lecturer of Health Education and Lifespan Jennifer McNulty, over the past two semesters. They have made the process much less stressful for me. As someone who tends to feel overwhelmed, their support has been invaluable. They consistently offer help, set aside time to review my work, and provide thoughtful suggestions to improve my thesis. Most importantly, they check in on my well-being, understanding that some weeks are busier than others.

Jen McNulty has also played a crucial role in my internship class this semester. She was instrumental in helping me find an internship that aligns with my career interests and continues to check in weekly to ensure everything is going well. She genuinely enjoys hearing about my progress and learning experiences. This has become one of my favorite classes, and I am incredibly grateful she recommended it, as it is preparing me well for graduate school.

What has coming to 91爆料 enabled you to explore beyond academics?

Coming to 91爆料 has allowed me to explore so much beyond academics. I鈥檝e had the chance to immerse myself in Maine鈥檚 beautiful outdoor environment, from hiking in Acadia National Park to exploring Mount Katahdin and Bar Harbor. The change in seasons has also introduced me to winter activities like snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, which I rarely experienced growing up in Maryland. Additionally, 91爆料 has allowed me to build independence, form strong relationships with professors and peers, and engage in meaningful experiences like internships that are shaping my future.

Favorite 91爆料 memory:

One of my favorite 91爆料 memories has been working closely with my thesis advisor, Dr. Christopher Nightingale, and committee member, Jen McNulty. Their support has made the process much less stressful and has helped me grow academically and professionally. Another great memory has been exploring Maine鈥檚 incredible outdoors 鈥 hiking in Acadia, visiting Bar Harbor, and experiencing the beauty of all four seasons. These experiences, along with the friendships and independence I鈥檝e gained, have made my time at 91爆料 truly unforgettable.

What鈥檚 on the horizon? What are your plans for after you graduate?

After graduation, I plan to attend Arcadia University in the fall to pursue my doctorate in Physical Therapy. My goal is to become a sports-specialized physical therapist, with hopes of working with a professional Major League Baseball or National Hockey League team. I鈥檓 excited to continue building my expertise in sports rehabilitation and injury prevention, combining my passion for athletics and healthcare to help athletes perform at their best.

Special thank you message:

I want to express my deepest gratitude to my professors, mentors, friends, and family who have supported me throughout my journey at 91爆料. A special thank you to Dr. Christopher Nightingale and Jennifer McNulty for their unwavering guidance and encouragement during my thesis and internship experience. Your support has made all the difference. To my friends and family, thank you for always believing in me. 91爆料 has given me incredible memories, lifelong friendships, and the confidence to pursue my dreams. I am truly grateful!

Owen Mild: Outstanding Graduate Student in Kinesiology and Physical Education /edhd/2025/04/14/owen-mild-outstanding-graduate-student-in-kinesiology-and-physical-education/ Mon, 14 Apr 2025 14:18:16 +0000 /edhd/?p=25994
A photo of Owen Mild.

Owen Mild of Tremont, Maine is the 2025 Outstanding Graduate Student in Kinesiology and Physical Education in the 91爆料 College of Education and Human Development. A student athlete on the track and field team (200- and 400-meter, and 4 x 400-meter relay), Mild is earning his Master of Education (M.Ed.) with a concentration in Exercise Science. For the past two years, Mild has served as graduate teaching assistant for the KPE 253: Lifetime Fitness and Health course. He also taught the KPE 376: Kinesiology course. Prior to earning his M.Ed., Mild graduated from 91爆料 with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in Kinesiology and Physical Education.

Why did you choose 91爆料 for graduate school?

One of the primary reasons I chose to continue my postsecondary education at the 91爆料 was how much this school means to me. Additionally, I was given an opportunity to be Dr. Robert Lehnhard鈥檚 graduate assistant to learn from him and teach undergraduate students while preparing myself for the next step in my academic journey.

Have you collaborated with a mentor, professor or role model who made your time at 91爆料 better, and if so, who are they and how have they impacted your time at 91爆料?

Many people have made these two years everything they have been and made a positive impact on me and helped me, especially when I was given an opportunity to take full responsibility for the KPE 376: Kinesiology course. Jesse Kaye-Schiess, Shannan Fotter, Dr. Alicia Lacy, Dr. Chris Nightingale and Dr. Shannon Wright all have been a sounding board for me and have demonstrated how to appropriately and effectively instruct and care for students. They work hard and care about the program they have built here, which is producing students who will make the world a better place. Jen McNulty has helped make Lengyel Hall feel like home and has also served a huge role in shaping my education and skills as an instructor. Of course, I would be remiss if I did not mention Dr. Lehnhard, one of the most influential role models I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know in my young adult life. He has taught me much more about life than he has about kinesiology or glycolysis, and I learned a lot about that. I would also like to highlight Diane Legrande, the administrative specialist for the School of Kinesiology, Physical Education and Athletic Training. This school would not be the same without her and she has without question made my personal life and work life easier in the last two years.

What has 91爆料 enabled you to explore beyond academics?

The 91爆料 allowed me to compete in track and field at the Division I level and meet people who I will have as friends for the rest of my life.

What advice do you have for incoming graduate students to help them get off to the best start academically?

Any incoming graduate students must be aware that they are in full control of their destiny. It sounds corny but this statement 鈥 鈥淎cademics, and life, are what you make of it鈥 鈥 is true to its core.

What鈥檚 on the horizon? What are your plans for after you graduate?

After graduation, I plan to temporarily work as an EMT to serve my community and obtain valuable experience for my future in medical school and as a physician.

Special thank you message:

I would like to extend a special thank you to my family. Without them I would not be here today.

Special thanks: I would like to thank the School of Kinesiology, Physical Education and Athletic Training and all the professors for a great four years. This program has provided me with the background I need as I enter graduate school for physical therapy and has introduced me to some of my lifelong friends. Thank you to my brother Tyler, friends and extended family for being my cheer squad. Most importantly, I thank my parents, Christopher and Michele, for being so supportive my entire life鈥擨 would not be in this position without you!

Favorite 91爆料 memory: One of my favorite 91爆料 classroom memories was learning to tape ankles in professor Alicia Lacy’s class, KPE 250: Prevention and Care for Sports Injury. It was such a fun bonding experience taping classmates and learning other techniques. Additionally, I will always cherish the memories of playing pickle ball every Thursday with classmates Brooke, Kimmy and Kailee at the Student Recreation Center.

Read a Q&A with Graham below.

What difference has 91爆料 made in your life and in helping you reach your goals?

A photo of Garrett Graham at the 91爆料's undergraduate commencement.

91爆料 has given me experiences that will last a lifetime. I鈥檓 grateful for the relationships I鈥檝e made and how the university has helped me grow as a person. Throughout the ups and downs, I received exceptional support.

Have you had an experience at 91爆料 that has changed or shaped the way you see the world? If so, tell us about it.

An experience that had a lasting impact on me was during my senior year as an undergrad. I had just gotten out of football practice and headed to one of the kinesiology courses I was taking at the time. That day a special guest taught the class and changed my outlook towards life. It wasn鈥檛 the material he taught but the way he taught. You could tell he cared about each student as a human being and not just a test score. After that class, I felt a drive to become a better person internally and externally.

Have you worked closely with a professor or mentor who made your 91爆料 experience better? If so, tell us about them.

Working as a graduate assistant for Jennifer McNulty and Dr. Robert Lehnhard made the work environment feel like home. These are two individuals who care about people and making change in the world. Dr. Lehnhard is one of the smartest and caring individuals I know. He is the definition of tough love but will always put the people he cares about before him. Unless it鈥檚 a bag of Smart Pop. Jennifer McNulty is someone that can鈥檛 be described in a few sentences. This is someone that constantly has a full plate, but continues to show up everyday with the same drive and positivity to teach future educators. Her admirable work ethic and dedication never goes unnoticed. I鈥檓 more than lucky to work with these amazing people.

What advice do you have for incoming graduate students to help them get off to the best start academically?

One piece of advice I would give to incoming graduate students is to find your craft. Whether that鈥檚 a career choice, a thesis or a subject. This is where you get to hone in on your field and become an expert in it. I鈥檓 nowhere near an expert and will never stop learning. Focusing on your craft will give you a sense of direction.

Why 91爆料?

91爆料 gave me the opportunity to continue my education while playing football.

Favorite 91爆料 memory:

Spending time with my closest friends throughout the years.

Special Thank You message:

Thank you for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to be a graduate assistant. I wouldn鈥檛 be here today without the wonderful people I鈥檝e met along the way. It鈥檚 been a journey these past six years, filled with laughs and crying. I wouldn’t change a thing.

91爆料 offers new graduate certificates that meet the needs of Maine teachers, outdoor leaders /edhd/2023/11/30/umaine-offers-new-graduate-certificates-that-meet-the-needs-of-maine-teachers-outdoor-leaders/ Thu, 30 Nov 2023 20:50:20 +0000 /edhd/?p=23243 The 91爆料鈥檚 College of Education and Human Development is launching three new graduate certificates aimed at teachers looking to boost their knowledge and skills in the areas of multilingual special education, adapted physical education and outdoor leadership.听]]>

The 91爆料鈥檚 College of Education and Human Development is launching three new graduate certificates aimed at teachers looking to boost their knowledge and skills in the areas of multilingual special education, adapted physical education and outdoor leadership.

The five-course (15 credits) graduate certificate, offered entirely via , is designed to equip educators with a deeper understanding of evidence-based practices and educational policies to support culturally and linguistically diverse students, including multilingual learners, with disabilities.听

According to the U.S. Department of Education鈥檚 Office of Special Education Programs, nearly 12% of multilingual learners in K-12 schools have a disability. Between 2012 and 2020, this student population grew by nearly 30% nationwide.

Melissa Cuba, 91爆料 assistant professor of special education, says that under federal law, multilingual learners with disabilities are entitled to language acquisition and special education services, both of which are needed for them to be successful in school and beyond.

鈥淭his requires a great deal of collaboration and coordination among educators who have applied knowledge of special education and language development best practices and policies,鈥 says Cuba. 鈥淪o this program responds to a growing need across our state and region to ensure educators have the skills and tools to work as a team to provide these services.鈥

91爆料鈥檚 graduate program in special education now offers five graduate certificates, all of which can be applied toward a master鈥檚 or education specialist degree in special education.

The Adapted Physical Education graduate certificate addresses the need in Maine for more teachers with the knowledge, skills and practical experiences to support students with disabilities in physical education classes. The five-course sequence (15 credits) is designed to enhance teachers鈥 use of age- and developmentally-appropriate practices for all learners.

Educators who complete the certificate will be eligible to apply for the Maine Department of Education鈥檚 adapted physical education endorsement.

鈥淎ll students deserve appropriate support in order to participate in classes that promote their physical, emotional and intellectual growth,鈥 says Shannan Fotter, lecturer in kinesiology and physical education and coordinator of the certificate program. 鈥淭his certificate will give teachers a more robust understanding of how to conduct accurate and comprehensive assessments of students with disabilities, as well as how to design and adapt instruction that meets their needs.鈥

The Outdoor Leadership and Education graduate certificate provides students with a combination of hands-on practice and theory to facilitate meaningful, high-quality outdoor learning opportunities for participants of all ages. The five-course program (15 credits) is focused on the professional knowledge and field experiences needed for anyone interested in successfully incorporating more experiential and place-based learning into various preK-12 schools, postsecondary and adult education settings.

A recent from the U.S. Department of Commerce鈥檚 Bureau of Economic Analysis found that Maine鈥檚 outdoor recreation economy grew more than 16% from 2021 to 2022 and generates more than $3 billion annually. That鈥檚 about 4% of the state鈥檚 gross domestic product, the sixth highest percentage among all 50 states.听

鈥淢aine鈥檚 natural resources have always been an essential part of our heritage and economy,鈥 says Lauren Jacobs, lecturer and coordinator of 91爆料鈥檚 outdoor leadership program. 鈥淥utdoor industries and jobs are particularly important for the sustainability of rural communities. We鈥檙e excited to offer this graduate certificate to help build a skilled cadre of stewards, educators and guides to lead groups knowledgably, ethically and safely in a variety of wilderness settings.鈥

All graduate certificates require a bachelor鈥檚 degree. Prospective students can apply online via the 91爆料 Graduate School. More information is available online.

When she graduates from the 91爆料 next May, Kimmy Chhoeuk of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts plans to go directly into a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program.

Although she鈥檚 not sure where she鈥檒l be continuing her education, Chhoeuk 鈥 a kinesiology and physical education major with a concentration in exercise science and a minor in psychology 鈥 already has options. She鈥檚 been accepted to the DPT program at Tufts University near Boston and the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Worcester. She鈥檚 waiting to hear back from a few other schools where she applied before making a final decision.

鈥淚 just think movement is the best way to recover, and I want to help patients recover from injuries and improve their overall well-being,鈥 says Chhoeuk, who hurt her throwing arm while playing club softball a few years ago, which required physical therapy and led to her interest in the field.

Last summer, Chhoeuk interned at a PT clinic in her hometown, where she got to learn everything from the business side to the clinical side of a physical therapy office. The internship served as her senior capstone and reinforced her desire to pursue a career in the field.

鈥淏eing able to witness patients improve over weeks or months was so rewarding,鈥 Chhoeuk says.

At 91爆料, Chhoeuk has gotten plenty of support from faculty and staff to keep striving toward her goals. Jesse Kaye-Schiess, a lecturer and advisor in kinesiology and physical education, and Shannan Fotter, also a lecturer in kinesiology and physical education, have been particularly helpful.

鈥淛esse has been there every step of the way, figuring out which classes to take and which opportunities to pursue, and Shannan wrote letters of recommendation for my DPT applications,鈥 Chhoeuk says.

She says the exercise science program offered everything she needed to succeed at her internship and gave her confidence as she applied to graduate programs.

鈥淚鈥檝e learned so much about the body and how it works,鈥 she says 鈥淚n a lot of my classes, we work with clients one-on-one. We also learned about different methods and equipment that are used for injury treatment and prevention that I got to see in a real-world setting at the clinic where I did my internship.鈥

Besides academics, Chhoeuk is the current president of 91爆料 Club Softball and is a member of the Physical Education Student Organization. She says she鈥檒l always treasure the relationships she鈥檚 forged and the personal growth that she鈥檚 experienced at 91爆料.

鈥淚 met my roommates freshman year, and honestly those are going to be lifelong friendships,鈥 she says. 鈥淎lso coming from Massachusetts, it was a comfortable distance for me, where I could go home for a weekend if I needed to. But I鈥檝e also learned to live independently and figure out who I am and who I want to be.鈥
