Why is Food Being Thrown Away While People Go Hungry?<\/h3>\n

My entire life, I always have hated throwing out food. When I was growing up, my mother would tell me to finish what was on my plate because there are starving people in this world. I was one of the lucky children that always had food in front of me. In New England and Maine,<\/strong> <\/span>we rank some of the highest in the country for child food insecurity<\/b>. Children not having access to food never sat well with me. Kids should be out playing and learning, and not worrying about if they were going to get fed before and after school. With 1 in 5 children in Maine experiencing food insecurity,<\/strong> there is much work to be done. That\u2019s where you and I come in.<\/span><\/p>\n

How Can YOU Make a Difference?<\/h3>\n

As I continued to think about the food waste problem and wonder how I could make a difference, I saw a Mitchell Center for Sustainability Solutions student internship offering students the opportunity to develop food waste solutions in Maine<\/span>. O<\/span>ne of the key food waste solutions was focused on developing a Maine community food rescue network – Food Rescue MAINE<\/a><\/strong><\/em> – using the Food Rescue U.S. system<\/strong><\/em><\/a> to successfully connect community food surplus to address community food insecurity using community volunteers, called \u201cfood rescue heroes\u201d.\u00a0 This system effectively reducing food waste and feeding people in over 30 communities in the United States.<\/span>\u00a0I applied and was selected for this internship!<\/span><\/p>\n

A Day in the Life of a Maine Food Rescue Volunteer:<\/h3>\n

As part of my new Mitchell Center – Maine food waste solutions internship, I wanted to be part of the solution. As a result, I signed up with Food Rescue MAINE to be a food rescuer in York County where I go to school.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how it works:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. To begin, I <\/span>log <\/b>onto my Food Rescue MAINE account<\/b> using my phone.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. \u00a0Next, I <\/span>check<\/b> the \u201cFood Rescues Available\u201d <\/b>section of the Food Rescue MAINE site.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Today is Wednesday, and I am free after 2pm; I <\/span>claim <\/b>a food rescue that matches my available time and location – <\/b>about 2 hours in the Biddeford area. The \u201cFood Rescues Available\u201d list the time for pick-up, location of the food pick-up, location of the food drop-off.\u00a0 Typically, food rescues take place within one zip code and take no more than 30 minutes to complete<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. I <\/span>drive and pick-up <\/b>food at the food donor location<\/b>, the University of New England Dining Hall.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. I <\/span>deliver<\/b> the food to the feeding partner<\/b>, Bon Appetit Food Pantry- or to wherever the food is needed.<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Talking with the feeding partner, I<\/span> record<\/b> the amount of food delivered<\/b> in the \u201cFood Donation Delivered\u201d section of my FRM account.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. I <\/span>sleep wel<\/b>l<\/strong> knowing that I rescued 30 meals to feed people in Maine.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
