  {"id":6873,"date":"2025-06-02T13:50:39","date_gmt":"2025-06-02T17:50:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mafes\/?p=6873"},"modified":"2025-06-13T15:36:00","modified_gmt":"2025-06-13T19:36:00","slug":"new-guide-explores-how-cemeteries-can-conserve-local-flora","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/mafes\/2025\/06\/02\/new-guide-explores-how-cemeteries-can-conserve-local-flora\/","title":{"rendered":"New guide explores how cemeteries can conserve local flora"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>91±¬ΑΟ researchers have released a guide on how to promote the natural beauty of cemeteries statewide while conserving the local flora that populate them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cConstellation of Living Memorials\u2019 Guide to Intentional Native Landscaping in Maine,\u201d available through <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.library.umaine.edu\/sfr_facpub\/15\/\">Fogler Library\u2019s Digital Commons<\/a>, offers strategies on landscaping with native plants \u2014 identifying what plants reside in which different areas of the state and how to integrate them \u2014 and how to identify and remove invasive species that threaten the green spaces within cemeteries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are interested in removing invasive plants and promoting native plant species across all our public green spaces, including Riverside Cemetery in Orono. We are glad to see this guide released as it will help us and other towns managing public cemeteries,\u201d said Megan Hess (\u201819), environmental services manager for the town of Orono who previously earned a master\u2019s degree in ecology and environmental sciences from 91±¬ΑΟ.
