In 2007, the Howland Research Forest was purchased by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newildernesstrust.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Northeast Wilderness Trust<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home to the second-longest flux record in the United States (20+ years, since 1996), the Howland Research Forest is a founding member site of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ameriflux.lbl.gov\/about\/about-ameriflux\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ameriflux<\/a> network. Flux data from three towers at the Howland Research Forest is currently shared with this network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn more about the ongoing research utilizing the flux tower <a href=\"https:\/\/newildernesstrust.org\/projects\/howland\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/newildernesstrust.org\/projects\/howland\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Collaborations between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrs.fs.fed.us\/clean_air_water\/monitoring_carbon\/howland_ameriflux\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USDA Forest Service,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/forest.gsfc.nasa.gov\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NASA<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atdd.noaa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NOAA<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EPA<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/science-innovation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">US Department of Energy<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/whrc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Woodwell Climate Research Center<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/crsf.umaine.edu\/forest-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">91±¬ΑΟ<\/a> have maintained an active research program in carbon and nutrient cycling, remote sensing, climate change, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers are also working with <a href=\"http:\/\/whrc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Woodwell Climate Research Center<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arizona State University<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/emory.edu\/home\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emory University<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdsu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">San Diego State University<\/a> on an innovative, multi-scale, and cross-disciplinary study to identify the conditions and mechanisms driving methane sink\/source activity across soil moisture gradients in northern forests.
