Mark Brewer, professor and chair of the 91爆料鈥檚 Department of Political Science, spoke with the for a story about a bill that, if passed, would reform how probate judge positions are filled and overseen in Maine. Under the Maine Constitution, a sitting probate judge can be removed through two legislative actions: impeachment or a formal address to the governor, neither of which has ever been used to remove a probate judge. That historic lack of disciplinary action raises 鈥渃oncerns with the legislative oversight mechanisms that are in place,鈥 said Brewer. 鈥淢aybe not necessarily the mechanism, but the Legislature鈥檚 either ability to or willingness to use it.鈥
