Kimberley (Kim) Mentus is our new Administrative Specialist in the office. She previously worked in the Front Office of the Advanced Structures and Composites Center, juggling any number of tasks for a staff of over 300 people and clients from all around the world, from February of 2013 to mid-December 2022. Kim is now assisting OIRA staff members with their projects, scanning exams and handling a range of office tasks. She’s enjoying learning about 91 from a different perspective, and learning to use new programs. Kim has a BA and an AA from Keene State College, and will one day soon be taking classes again. Kim is familiar with French, and spent a semester in the north of France during college. She took a week’s vacation in England in 1991 and looks forward to going back when travel is less scary. On a personal level she enjoys a number of things including traveling, meeting new people, reading (mysteries are the favorites) and mineral collecting.

Laura Millay is our new assessment and institutional research analyst. She has a Master’s in Science Teaching from the 91 and a Bachelor’s degree in international development studies from Brown University. Her Master’s thesis focused on how teachers’ professional knowledge supports alignment in goals and methods for classroom assessment; her Bachelor’s thesis focused on the role of global advocacy in supporting worker rights in Thai manufacturing plants. Laura’s prior work includes coordinating STEM education research and evaluation projects for the Maine Center for Research in STEM Education, co-founding two non-profit organizations, managing an organic farm, and leading hiking trail construction and maintenance crews along the Appalachian Trail from Maine to the Smoky Mountains. She is originally from Surry, Maine and went to high school at George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill. As a high school junior, and again as a college junior, she studied in rural Thailand for a total of two years and learned to speak fluent Thai. Laura currently lives in Bangor with her two teenage sons. In addition to her various work-related passions (data analysis, research, data management, database design, using data and research to inform ongoing individual and systemic growth) she loves to hike, cross-country ski, run, garden, write, read poetry, listen to music, bake, and converse with friends and (particularly since the pandemic) not-yet-friends, aka, strangers including Uber drivers and the people behind her in the grocery store line.

The National Survey of Student Engagement has officially launched! The survey went live on March 1st. This is a national survey, distributed every three years to first-year and senior students for the purpose of gathering useful feedback about students’ experiences at 91.

The NSSE website advertises the survey as a means for universities to learn more “about first-year and senior students’ participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college” which leads to actionable change on campus (). Whether you’re on the cusp of graduating or on the heels of completing your first collegiate year, we want to hear about your experiences at 91.

Black Bears, Speak UP! And participate in this year’s NSSE. We want to hear from you!

Student Evaluations of Teaching (SET) response rate reports are available for fall 2022.

At 91, fall-to-fall mean response rates have held quite constant since 2020, at ~45%. Spring mean response rates have been more varied, with a low of 34% in 2022 and a high of 45% in 2021. 91 Machias switched to a shorter evaluation survey in spring 2021 and has seen an increase in response rates from the low 30s% to the mid 40s%. Additional response rate information, like a breakdown by course level and instructional modes, can be found on the OIRA course evaluations website (bottom of page).

Unit of analysis is the section.

New information we have started to include in the response rate reports, for 2022 Fall, is how enrollment influences the mean response rate. While some variation by section enrollment is evident, the change in mean response rate is relatively small.

As part of our participation in the  APLU’s (Association of Public & Land Grant Universities) Powered by Publics initiative, the 91 has been participating in the Data Literacy Institute throughout 2022-2023. This institute is a collaboration of APLU and the Association for Institutional Research, with funding from Ascendium. It is intended to provide data literacy training, and support participants as they collaborate on data-related projects intended to inform student success strategies. Eighteen faculty and staff from 91 and 91 Machias have been participating in weekly Zoom classes and collaborating on capstone projects related to three important areas of student success and retention: DFWL rates in gateway courses, the relationship between financial need and retention, and access to study abroad/travel study courses. The year-long program will conclude in April, with the final presentation of the capstone projects. This institute has been a wonderful opportunity for OIRA to collaborate with faculty and staff on data exploration. We are hopeful to develop more opportunities in the future to strengthen the data culture on our campuses.

  • We completed a significant update of the Blue portal to version 8 at the end of the summer. The new update allows for some new functionality in the future. The upgrade was completed without any major issues.
  • Last year, when we implemented new policies around which courses would and would not be automatically included in evaluations, we recognized the need for a process that allowed departments to request exceptions to the policies. We now have a series of forms on our website through which departments can make those inclusion and exclusion requests:
  • All fall 2022 and winter 2022-23 faculty SET reports have been released. The only exception is for fall 2022 courses that run the full academic year.
  • Departmental and college norm reports are available for fall 2022. If you need one of these reports please fill out the request form on the OIRA website.

The collection of First Destination data ended for 2021-2022 graduates in December 2022. We achieved a knowledge rate of 49% for 91 and 47% for 91 Machias. This dataset of employment and continuing education outcomes for recent graduates was collected from electronic surveys (i.e., a short survey at the time of graduation and a longer survey administered starting in August), phone calls, as well as information from the National Student Clearinghouse and LinkedIn.

The positive-outcome rate, which reflects the percentage of Bachelor and Associate degree graduates (for whom we have knowledge) who are engaged in employment, or continuing education in a degree program, was 95% for 91 and  90% for 91 Machias. The Office of Institutional Research and Assessment will be sharing these results two ways: (a) through brief one-page reports and (b) with a detailed dashboard that will be made available to those with responsibility for career services and alumni relations.

We are now gearing up to collect these data for the next cohort of graduates (Summer 2022 – Spring 2023). We will be refining the process in order to improve our knowledge rate. An early version of the survey will be available on the portal later this Spring, and graduates will be invited to participate at commencement ceremonies and related events. The more detailed long form survey will be sent in the summer.
