Thank you for your hard work and dedication to making our 2026 Commencement a resounding success. It was an incredible weekend of celebration for our graduates, beginning with an action-packed Hearty Maine Farewell and finishing with a memorable ceremony at our regional campus in Machias.

It was great to be back in Alfond Arena this year for our Graduate School and undergraduate ceremonies, returning to tradition and celebrating in the beautifully renovated arena. I know this meant a lot to our students, and I thank all who made this return possible.

To our nearly 150 volunteers, including students, faculty, and staff, we are grateful for your contributions to making this weekend an enjoyable experience for our graduates, their families and our greater community. I was proud to see so many talented researchers and educators represent the university as faculty marshals. We simply can’t achieve the level of excellence we are able to provide without your significant contributions.

This year’s Commencement Steering Committee did a remarkable job coordinating logistics, ensuring a smooth and well-run weekend. I specifically want to thank Kevin Coughlin, Mallory Morehouse, Dianne Avery, Kathleen Harding-Heber, and the President’s Office staff for their efforts. To the team who coordinated the Machias ceremony, including Danielle Wormell, Sarahmarie Abernethy, BJ Marshall, Linda Patryn, Kristen Bono, and Hope Shore, I thank you for your hard work.

Commencement unites this university under our common mission as a learner-centered R1, and that mission was on full display. It was great to see the collaborative work among our colleges, Enrollment Management, Academic Affairs, Student Life, the Graduate School, Facilities Management, Marketing and Communications, Athletics and many more units to make this weekend come to fruition.

You have all outdone yourselves.

Now, I ask that you take some time to rest and recharge as we prepare to welcome the Class of 2030 and all of our new and returning students with a Hearty Maine Hello in a few short months.

Sincerely,
Joan Ferrini-Mundy,ÌýPresident

Leadership transition at 91±¬ÁÏ Machias /president/2026/05/leadership-transition-at-umaine-machias/ Fri, 08 May 2026 19:48:03 +0000 /president/?p=15426 Dear members of the 91±¬ÁÏ and 91±¬ÁÏ at Machias communities,

I am writing to share the bittersweet news that Dean and Campus Director of 91±¬ÁÏ Machias Dr. Megan Walsh has accepted a new position as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Edgewood University in Madison, Wisconsin.

Dr. Walsh joined the Machias community in 2022 during a time of significant change. Our campuses were working to align on several fronts, including academics, student services, and culturally as we grew together as Black Bears.

Her leadership has been steady and collaborative, ensuring that all voices were considered in decision making, whether from students, faculty, staff, or long-standing community members. Dr. Walsh’s commitment to the Town of Machias and the greater Downeast region was exemplified in every strategic decision she made.

Dr. Walsh’s dedication to student recruitment helped to stabilize enrollments after a period of decline, and we are excited about the future of 91±¬ÁÏ Machias as we continue to see local and out-of-state students choosing to join the one-of-a-kind community at our coastal campus.

In addition to these great accomplishments, Dr. Walsh also oversaw the renovation of Reynolds Gymnasium, an important community hub in Machias. She has also overseen continued improvements to campus housing and the upcoming development of the Early College Student Support Center.

I am also personally grateful for her support as Interim Chief of Staff last summer during a period of transition in my office.

We wish Dr. Walsh well as she steps into this new leadership role, and thank her for all of the incredible work she has done for 91±¬ÁÏ and 91±¬ÁÏ Machias. Her last day will be June 30, 2026.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Walsh.

Sincerely,

Congratulations, Class of 2026! /president/2026/05/congratulations-class-of-2026/ Wed, 06 May 2026 19:46:53 +0000 /president/?p=15413 Dear 91±¬ÁÏ and 91±¬ÁÏ at Machias community,

As commencement approaches, I have been reflecting on a meaningful academic year across our campuses, marked by growth, resilience, and shared achievement as a learner-centered R1 university.

That progress is embodied in our students, who have engaged deeply in their education and are preparing for what comes next, including internships, first steps in their careers, and graduate and professional study. Their accomplishments demonstrate the determination and commitment that define our communities.

This year, 91±¬ÁÏ valedictorian Ruth Griffith and co-salutatorians Isabelle Irani and Andrii Obertas, along with 91±¬ÁÏ Machias valedictorian Rachel D’Alessandro and salutatorian Kalli Sternberg, exemplify excellence in academics, research and service. Outstanding graduating students across our colleges have also distinguished themselves through their achievements and commitment to their communities.

None of this happens without our faculty and staff. Your work supports our students and sustains our university. Thank you for your dedication and the care you bring to your work. Mohamad Musavi is the recipient of this year’s Distinguished Maine Professor Award. Presidential Award winners Mehdi Tajvidi, Darren Ranco, Jay Wason, Melissa Ladenheim and Bill Davids are also examples of that strength and of the learning environment our faculty help create.

I also want to thank our alumni, families, and partners who strengthen and extend our impact. This year’s commencement speakers show the depth of our alumni community: Timothy Simons, a 2001 graduate, will address our undergraduates, and Amber Boutiette and Patrick Breeding (’17, G’19), co-founders of Marin Skincare, will speak at the Graduate School ceremony. They represent the many paths our graduates take and their impact in Maine and beyond.

Looking back, our sense of community is clear in the moments that brought us together. In athletics, our and teams won America East championships. That same spirit was evident during Maine Day of Service, as our community supported others, highlighting the pride and shared purpose that define 91±¬ÁÏ.

As commencement nears, we look forward to celebrating the achievements of our graduating students. To the Class of 2026, you have made your mark on this university, and we are proud of all you have accomplished. We are confident in what lies ahead as you begin your careers, continue your education, or serve your communities.

For our returning students, I hope the summer provides time for rest and renewal. I look forward to welcoming you back in the fall.

Thank you all for the dedication and energy you bring to our university. I’m excited to celebrate with you in the days ahead.

Sincerely,
Joan Ferrini-Mundy,ÌýPresident

Celebrating the achievements of our community — April 16, 2026 /president/2026/04/celebrating-the-achievements-of-our-community-april-16-2026/ Thu, 16 Apr 2026 19:27:41 +0000 /president/?p=15369 Dear members of the 91±¬ÁÏ and 91±¬ÁÏ at Machias communities,

I hope you are enjoying the welcome arrival of spring.

This is a season for recognizing the achievements of our terrific students, faculty, and staff. Many events in the coming weeks will highlight their accomplishments, and I encourage you to attend if you can. One of my favorite annual events is this Friday’s Student Symposium, when nearly 1,000 students will present research, scholarship, and creative activity developed with their dedicated faculty mentors. It is a powerful example of what it means to be a learner-centered R1 university.

That same commitment to experiential learning is reflected in the approximately 2,200 students who work across the university in roles that support departments, services, and campus life. Increasingly, these roles are designed to build professional skills and connect to students’ academic and career interests, consistent with our broader commitment to preparing students for meaningful careers. Always, and especially during this  (April 13-17), we thank them for the essential role they play.

These experiences — along with others, including through 91±¬ÁÏ’s athletics, the arts, student organizations, and service — shape the journeys our students carry with them to graduation and well beyond. We are now just over three weeks away from Commencement at our recently renovated Alfond Arena, where we will celebrate the Class of 2026 and the faculty, staff, and loved ones who supported their success.

As we mark this milestone, we are also focused on welcoming incoming Black Bears. Faculty and staff across our university have taken part in an all-hands-on-deck effort to connect with admitted students and their families. Through handwritten postcards, phone calls, and events, including our Open House on April 25, they are helping future students see themselves at 91±¬ÁÏ and at our regional campus in Machias and develop a strong sense of belonging.

This spring has also brought meaningful recognition for faculty achievement. To highlight just a few: Brian McGill has been named an AAAS Fellow, Rob Glover has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award, and David Neivandt and Giovanna Guidoboni were elected to the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. Together, these and other honors bestowed on our faculty reflect the national and international recognition of 91±¬ÁÏ scholars.

Our faculty’s contributions are directly addressing real-world challenges here in Maine while also engaging students in research. Recent examples the university has highlighted in its external communications include Caitlin Howell’s work using fungi to create plastic-free food packaging, Damian Brady’s satellite data model supporting oyster farmers, and â€™s mass timber research. Furthermore, Lily Calderwood and Sean Birkel are supporting farmers through advanced weather networks, Catherine Biddle is strengthening rural schools, Matthew Magnani is exploring the frontiers of generative AI, and â€™ recent book on Stephen King’s writing process has drawn international attention.

I am deeply grateful to all who support our students, advance our mission, and foster an environment where learning and discovery can thrive. The work of our exceptional faculty opens up possibilities for our students, serves the state of Maine, and helps drive continued investment in teaching and research facilities across our campuses and statewide sites and centers.

In the weeks ahead, there will be many opportunities to recognize achievement, welcome new members to our community, reaffirm our shared mission, and position our university for continued success and impact.

To faculty and staff, thank you for all you do to support our students and strengthen the 91±¬ÁÏ for the future. And to our students, especially our upcoming graduates, congratulations on another successful semester, and thank you for shaping our great university with all that you do.

Sincerely,

Joan Ferrini-Mundy,ÌýPresident
