 <\/p>\n

sitting on the seashore\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

of my mind\u2019s edge<\/span><\/p>\n

wondering at paranoia, fear, joy, sadness, contentment<\/span><\/p>\n

and all the myriad waves\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

lapping against the coarse sand of my synapses<\/span><\/p>\n

thoughts, like seals, wriggle\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

their blubbery shapes into my consciousness<\/span><\/p>\n

marking a trail through my memory<\/span><\/p>\n

the space between stimulus and response<\/span><\/p>\n

seals barking, you have a choice<\/span><\/p>\n

seals beckoning me closer and closer\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

toward freedom<\/span><\/p>\n

their shiny fur, wet and dark\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

eyes black and whiskers erect<\/span><\/p>\n

the bones in their fins remind you of fingers<\/span><\/p>\n

and we remember<\/span><\/p>\n

deep in the ancestral memory of our DNA<\/span><\/p>\n

when we wriggled out of the salty womb<\/span><\/p>\n

and climbed into the trees<\/span><\/p>\n

trading buoyancy for gravity<\/span><\/p>\n

kelp for the forest canopy<\/span><\/p>\n

and with our bridged noses\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

we dive back into our memory\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

returning to our mother<\/span><\/p>\n

always to be born again<\/span><\/p>\n

with the next breath<\/span><\/p>\n

inhaling the chemical products of millennia of forests and oceans<\/span><\/p>\n

a thin layer of gas\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

surrounding a little sphere<\/span><\/p>\n

afloat in a big universe<\/span><\/p>\n

remembering where the next breath comes from<\/span><\/p>\n

only if first we remember we\u2019re breathing<\/span><\/p>\n
