4 Great Blues<\/h3>\n

Great Blue<\/h3>\n

Ardea herodias\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The heron lifts off
\n<\/span>its granite pedestal
\n<\/span>with primordial
\n<\/span>grandeur,
\n<\/span>a pterodactyl
\n<\/span>come back
\n<\/span>to life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ponderous
\n<\/span>but aloft,
\n<\/span>it skims the bay
\n<\/span>with giant
\n<\/span>wingbeats,
\n<\/span>head tucked,
\n<\/span>neck coiled,
\n<\/span>legs trailing.<\/span><\/p>\n

I too want
\n<\/span>to rise from
\n<\/span>this rocky shore,
\n<\/span>redeemed,
\n<\/span>and flap into
\n<\/span>the great blue
\n<\/span>beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n

Luster<\/h3>\n

Corvus brachyrhynchos<\/em><\/p>\n

When she comes in
\n<\/span>for a landing,
\n<\/span>tail fanned,
\n<\/span>a bright band of white
\n<\/span>bisects black feathers.<\/span><\/p>\n

When she takes off,
\n<\/span>the flight feathers
\n<\/span>in her wings
\n<\/span>flash ivory.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not the glance
\n<\/span>of sunlight off
\n<\/span>ebony plumes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Not the iridescence
\n<\/span>of pitch-dark feathering
\n<\/span>collecting and reflecting
\n<\/span>the colors of the sky\u2013
\n<\/span>indigo, lavender, pearl.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She\u2019s not a white-collared crow
\n<\/span>blown hither from South Africa
\n<\/span>in a cross-Atlantic gale.<\/span><\/p>\n

No, this piebald crow
\n<\/span>is an exotic. She flocks
\n<\/span>with common crows
\n<\/span>in City Park, zebra striped
\n<\/span>in the melanin-rich murder,
\n<\/span>an undreamed bird
\n<\/span>in a familiar landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ossifragus,<\/span><\/i> bone-breaker<\/span><\/p>\n

Oh to be so far sighted
\n<\/span>as to see what I want
\n<\/span>from aloft\u2013
\n<\/span>a glint in bright waters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oh to be so bold
\n<\/span>as to fold my wings
\n<\/span>into free fall\u2014
\n<\/span>no hesitation, no doubts.<\/span><\/p>\n

To be chillingly exact,
\n<\/span>raising my wings,
\nlifting my legs,
\n<\/span>in the last breath.<\/span><\/p>\n

Deft enough
\n<\/span>to rake the surface
\n<\/span>with sharp, hooked claws,
\n<\/span>barbed pads on the soles of my feet.<\/span><\/p>\n

To sweep
\n<\/span>what I\u2019m after
\n<\/span>right out of the water
\n<\/span>and then rise<\/span><\/p>\n

on wild downbeats,
\n<\/span>shimmy my load
\n<\/span>into alignment\u2014
\n<\/span>head first, no drag.<\/span><\/p>\n

Oh to wing
\n<\/span>back to my eyrie,
\n<\/span>catch clinched
\n<\/span>in steel talons.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>like an 18-wheeler backing up
\n<\/span>carries for half a mile.
\n<\/span>Once I heard one call
\n<\/span>from a cabin on the coast
\n<\/span>and it sounded like the hiss
\n<\/span>of a radiator releasing steam
\n<\/span>only the cabin had no radiator
\n<\/span>no electricity
\n<\/span>no running water
\n<\/span>only candles and kerosene lamps
\n<\/span>rain barrels under downspouts
\n<\/span>an outhouse
\n<\/span>and a tiny saw-whet owl saying
\n<\/span>tssssssst<\/span><\/i>
\n<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0tssssssst<\/span><\/i>

Shags and Solitude<\/h3>\n

Cormorant, <\/span>corvus marinus<\/span><\/i>, “sea raven”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

17 shags balance on the high wire that spans
\n<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the Passagassawakeag at the Narrows
\n<\/span>where the Upper Bridge used to be.<\/span><\/p>\n

They shuffle flat webbed feet, better suited
\n<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to swimming than perching, teeter,
\n<\/span>face downriver, beaks tilted into the breeze.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some preen feathers with hooked bills.
\n<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Others hang inky wings out to dry. They croak
\n<\/span>companionably. Shit milky streams of guano.<\/span><\/p>\n

A mile upriver, on a quiet inlet, a lone shag
\n<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0straddles a dead limb over the water.
\n<\/span>Maybe the others were mean to him, <\/span><\/i>Tom<\/span> says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We chuckle, but I want to stand with this bird.
\n<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Escape the crowd, its glib camaraderie.
\n<\/span>Let my thoughts slow to the flow of the river.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
