    • At the peak of this mountain, there are beautiful 360-degree views of the surrounding bay and landscape. The name of the mountain originates from the story of two men in 1897 who “devised a scheme claiming that they could extract gold from the nearby seawater. These men worked as con artists who — after hiring hundreds of workers and collecting funds from investors — fled the area never to be prosecuted for their deception.”

    • “This conservation area is actually comprised of two open-access properties along the North Lubec Road— A 91 acre property owned by DCC on the south side of the road and a 30 acre easement property owned by Maine River Trails LLC. At one time the entire property was owned by esteemed naturalist Radcliffe Pike who planted an eclectic variety of horticultural plants now featured as an educational arboretum. The two properties also include a total of 1.5 miles of hiking trails which traverse a unique variety of plant, bird, and wildlife habitats as well as a sandy beach.

    • “The goal of the park is to honor the brave souls that have lost their lives in the fishing industry off the waters of Washington County, Maine, and Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada.” The memorial serves as an emotional reminder to the community of all the sacrifices made by the brave fishermen.

    • Last traditional smoked-herring facility in the United States, which closed its doors in 1991. On July 15, 1993, the smokehouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places. It now features rotating exhibits with arts and crafts and a gift shop.

Lighthouses

    • Located about a mile offshore, this lighthouse is best viewed by boat but can also be seen at a distance from various points along the shore. It was built in 1889 to accommodate shipping from fishing industries, primarily sardines.

    • This lighthouse was built in 1808 by the order of President Thomas Jefferson, and it is the only “candy-striped” lighthouse in the United States. They offer tours typically every Saturday during July and August, the Annual Lighthouse Celebration in July, and the second Saturday in September for Maine Open Lighthouse Day.
