- In 1938, the last hand-cranked phone system in the country was sold, giving the village of Bryant Pond direct-dial and catching them up with the modern phone world. The people of the village wanted to remember their old phones. This is when Gil Whitman (World War II veteran, county sheriff, Maine State Representative, barbershop quartet singer, and talented iron sculptor) decided to build a 14-foot candlestick phone to be installed in Remembrance Park.
