Returning to college after so many years was quite a decision to commit to. However, once I met with my B.U.S. adviser and went through my old transcripts, I was amazed at how easy it was to enroll and begin classes again. Once classes started, I quickly realized that they are structured to be very flexible, as long as I met each weekly deadline. I have even taken two accelerated classes so far during Summer University and Winter Session.

Although that was an everyday commitment and a lot of work, it was very manageable. I chose the , which fits nicely with my career. I have taken six classes and have enjoyed every one of them. As a 47-year-old, I have a different perspective on issues, which makes a difference in my classwork and reaching my degree goal.

I can’t thank the B.U.S. faculty and staff enough for helping me get started and answering my questions along the way. This is an excellent program. I am thrilled to have this opportunity to be part of the 91±¬ÁÏ once again.

My first semester at the 91±¬ÁÏ was the fall of 1989 just after getting off active duty in the Navy. After four years as a Navy Corpsman, my plan was to get a biology degree and go to medical school.

After a few semesters and a recall for military service, (I stayed active in the Navy Reserve until 1992), I found my goals in life had changed and I left the 91±¬ÁÏ to pursue a career as a paramedic.

In 1995, I was hired by Mayo Regional Hospital. In 2000 I became the department leader for the EMS department. I also worked as an EMS instructor during all of these years.

In 2010, I decided to change my career path and become a physician’s assistant. I returned to the 91±¬ÁÏ that fall to complete my B.S. in Biology so I could begin applying to PA programs. I stepped down as department leader prior to this but remained a full-time paramedic.

As with most adult returning students, I now had a family depending on me and my income as well as a mortgage. Quitting work and becoming a full-time student at that point was not an option for me. In spite of great advisors and faculty in the Biology department, I found it increasingly difficult to balance work, school, and family responsibilities especially with travel from Dover-Foxcroft to Orono – some semesters daily to attend required lectures and labs.

In the spring of 2015, I was facing a decision of needing another 2 to 3 years to graduate in Biology and be able to juggle my schedule so I could still work full-time or taking on the debt of giving up my full-time job possibly a year or two or more before starting PA school, which would have effectively doubled the time I would be living off loans and personal savings to graduate in 2016. I had all the prerequisite classes I needed for most PA programs completed; the classes I still needed to complete for my B.S. in Biology were not directly related to my field.

I talked with the University Studies program and learned I would be a good candidate to complete my degree with them. I have been able to take all remaining classes I need for a Bachelor’s degree online and still maintain a course of study consistent with what will help me in practice as a rural PA.

The University Studies staff and faculty have been exceptional to work with. They appreciate that you are trying to complete your degree and, at the same time, meet your family and professional responsibilities. I felt that through the years most people at the 91±¬ÁÏ did their best to recognize and work with the unique situation of my life as a non-traditional student but in my opinion, most of the University is geared to a traditional student body.

University Studies is designed for non-traditional students with unique life situations. By switching my major to University Studies I will still be graduating in 2016, as I had planned, but have been able to complete my last year and still work full-time.

When all the expenses and costs were tallied University Studies was able to allow me to meet my educational goal at savings, mostly from preserved income of approximately $60,000.00.

I feel my biggest mistake in returning to the University was that I did not look into this program first. I would encourage anyone considering a return to college to contact the University Studies program. The classes have been challenging but for the most part interesting, enjoyable, and accommodating. What has been a huge help and in my opinion the true strength of the program is the faculty and staff of University Studies in how they help the non-traditional student navigate an often rocky and confusing path to graduation.

One of the most important and enduring facets of my life has been my education. I consider that my formal education began in 1961 when I enrolled at the University of Illinois, in Champaign. It was a wondrous experience for me at the age of 17, and the exposure to biological sciences, literature, the French language, and anthropology and other courses entirely captivated me.

I had to work two jobs to put myself through school each of the two years of my attendance there. Eventually, I had to find full-time employment, and my dream of obtaining my bachelor’s degree was placed on hold for twenty-six years due to the demands of full-time employment and then raising a family.

In 1989, I had employment that allowed me to work during the day yet go to school in the evenings. I enrolled at Texas A&M in Corpus Christi, Texas, and accumulated additional credits totaling about 90 hours.

When I retired in 2009 and still had a strong desire to complete my college education and I contacted Barbara Howard, Director of Bachelor of University Studies at the 91±¬ÁÏ, Orono, to see if I could enroll in the university and if my credits were transferable. I made an appointment, submitted my high school and university transcripts, and later was informed that I was accepted!

From the day of my acceptance to the moment of this writing, I have been very motivated and excited about returning to the university beyond any words I am capable of expressing. The Division of Lifelong Learning at the 91±¬ÁÏ is an extraordinary component of the university which enables people like me to return to the university and work for their degree. Equally extraordinary is the Director, Barbara Howard who provides guidance and support toward the student’s endeavors. Since I began my quest in 2014, I have the highest regards for every one of the professors I have worked with, each who generously provided all the time I needed to answer my questions or provide direction.

If you or someone you know has a lifelong love of learning and want to fulfill their dream of graduating with a Bachelor’s degree from the 91±¬ÁÏ, please contact Barbara Howard and she will guide you on your educational path toward success. All that is required is your time and dedicated commitment to begin the most fulfilling educational odyssey of your life. I know this to be a fact, since it is now fifty-five years since I first enrolled in a university, and I will be seventy-three at the end of 2016, the year of my graduation!
