Rev. Rebecca Liberty, Director of the Wilson Center, released the following statement on behalf of the Wilson Center and its Board of Directors:

The Wilson Center joins the Jewish community locally and beyond in mourning the murders at Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh on October 27. We mourn the attack that reaches beyond a single congregation to Jews everywhere and the freedom to practice one鈥檚 faith in peace and safety. We join the Jewish community in anger at this latest outbreak of antisemitism, especially in the midst of a public discourse in which immigrants, people of color, and other minoritized communities are regularly maligned.

At this time, we acutely understand the need for people of diverse backgrounds to work together. As a multi-faith community, the Wilson Center re-dedicates itself to our mission of honoring diversity, working for social justice, and valuing above all the dignity and equality of all people.聽 As Congregation Beth El in Bangor stated in response to the attack: 鈥淟et us turn to our deepest calling to be B鈥檛zelem Elohim/in the image of the Divine. That is to be the hands, heart, and actions in this country and in our world that work to end this kind of hatred and violence.鈥

Rev. Lauren Seganos Cohen, Director of the Wilson Center, released the following statement on behalf of the Wilson Center and its Board of Directors:

In light of recent disturbing events in Charlottesville, Virginia,聽we affirm the value and dignity of people of color and minority communities, rejecting notions and acts of racism, antisemitism, intimidation, and intolerance. We condemn white supremacy, white nationalism, neo-Nazism, and any movement that promotes or perpetuates violence against people of color, Jews, Muslims, and other minority communities. We acknowledge the long history of violence, discrimination, and injustice against these groups in the United States, while also lamenting and confessing our own personal biases and prejudices, both conscious and unconscious. As a multifaith community, we re-commit ourselves to our mission of working for social justice, honoring diversity, offering opportunities for spiritual growth, and valuing above all the equality of all people.
