Applicants were asked to reflect on the following excerpt聽from 鈥淲here Do We Go From Here?鈥 as published in Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? By Martin Luther King, Jr. (1967), p. 62.
The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral,聽begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy.聽Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it.聽Through violence you may murder the liar,聽but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth.聽Through violence you may murder the hater,聽but you do not murder hate.聽In fact, violence merely increases hate.聽So it goes.聽Returning violence for violence multiplies violence,聽adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.聽Darkness cannot drive out darkness:only light can do that.聽Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that. 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽 聽-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.Excerpt from 鈥淲here Do We Go From Here?鈥 as published in Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?By Martin Luther King, Jr. (1967), p. 62.
