Research

Professor Khalil is the founding director of the CompuMAINE LabÌý(Compu³Ù²¹³Ù¾±´Ç²Ô²¹±ôÌýM´Ç»å±ð±ô¾±²Ô²µ,ÌýAnalysis of Images and N³Ü³¾±ð°ù¾±³¦²¹±ôÌýExperiments). He has co-authored almost 150 publications and obtained 50 grants/contracts totaling $8.5MÌý(as PI, co-PI, or senior personnel), while developing or restructuring several undergraduate and graduate courses in Mathematics, Statistics, Chemical Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering. He has trained 34 thesis students and in 2022 he received a Faculty Mentor Impact Award at the 91±¬ÁÏ.

Dr. Khalil’s most focused project relates to breast cancer, where he has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented at several international conferences. He has secured over $1.5M in funding specifically for the breast cancer project from the Maine Cancer Foundation, the National Cancer Institute, the Maine Technology Institute, the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, the National Science Foundation, and various accelerator programs. He is a co-inventor on three issued and one pending patents related to this work. In 2022 he founded a startup company called , which was awarded an exclusive license from 91±¬ÁÏ to commercialize the lab’s breast cancer risk assessment technology. WAVED went on to secure more grants from federal, state, and private entities, which is leading to very exciting and promising results. Through this work, academic research is now translating into clinical applications with the potential to save lives by improving early detection and risk assessment.
