Why did you decide to become a GSG senator?:ÌýI have joined the GSG Senate primarily to serve and contribute to the development of the graduate student community and the 91±¬ÁÏ at large

How would you best serve your constituents?:ÌýI intend to bridge the gap between the student government and the graduate students in my department/program through effective communication of events, opportunities, and interests between both parties.

Please tell us about your research or some fun facts about you:ÌýI am currently engaged in developing alternative feed ingredients to create healthy, cost-effective, and sustainable aquatic feeds aimed at enhancing food security.
Aside from work, I enjoy sewing, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.

How do you plan on communicating with your constituents?:ÌýCommunication will be via email and during departmental meetings. I am also available for Zoom calls and in-person meetings if need be.

Why did you choose to become a GSG Senator?: To represent my constituency, and to serve as a liaison between students in my department and the student governing body. To the best of my knowledge, facilitate student concerns to student leadership and help disseminate information from university leadership to students.
How would you best serve your constituents?: By providing all the necessary information and updates useful for the students to excel in their academic and professional life. I will represent my constituency and be a voice for the students of my constituency. I will make sure that any questions or concerns of students of my constituency will be heard. I will keep my fellow students informed about GSG travel grants, activities, and answer any questions students may have.
Please tell us about your research or some fun facts about you: My research focuses on post-harvest processes and value-addition of seaweed. During my free time I like travelling, singing, and watching movies.
How do you plan on communicating with your constituents?: E-mail and Zoom meetings for pertinent issues.

Reason behind joining the GSG as an officer: I joined the Graduate Student Government to help promote financial transparency, equitable resource allocation, and inclusive representation for graduate students. As treasurer, I aim to apply my accounting and analytics background to support responsible budgeting and strategic planning.

As an officer in the GSG, how would you like to contribute in such a way that you improve the situation for graduate students? I aim to streamline budget processes, advocate for fair funding, and enhance communication between GSG and the graduate student body. My goal is to ensure that financial decisions reflect the diverse needs and priorities of our community.

Long-Term Career Goals: To become a strategic leader in Accounting, Finance and Business Analytics, leveraging data-driven insights to enhance financial transparency, support ethical decision-making, and drive sustainable organizational growth.

Why did you decide to become a GSG senator?: I decided to become a GSG senator because I wanted to represent the voices of students in my department and contribute to improving the graduate student experience. Serving in this role allows me to stay engaged with the broader 91±¬ÁÏ community, advocate for resources and opportunities that benefit graduate students, and help strengthen the connection between students and university leadership.

How would you best serve your constituents?: I would best serve my constituents by actively listening to their concerns, keeping open lines of communication, and making sure their voices are heard at the GSG level. I believe in being approachable and transparent, so students feel comfortable bringing issues to me. I would also share updates regularly to keep them informed about resources, opportunities, and decisions that affect them.

Please tell us about your research or some fun facts about you: My research focuses on cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), renewable materials made from wood fibers that can replace petroleum-based plastics. I develop machine learning models to predict their mechanical properties and design new image analysis methods to measure fiber orientation under polarized light. Outside of research, I love dancing, baking, and painting!

How do you plan on communicating with your constituents?: I plan to communicate through regular emails, department announcements, and being approachable for one-on-one conversations.

Reason behind joining the GSG as an officer:ÌýI joined Graduate Student Government to help ensure that graduate students have equitable access to resources, funding opportunities, and decision-making spaces. As a disabled graduate student, I am particularly motivated to strengthen transparency and accessibility within student government and funding processes.

As an officer in the GSG, how would you like to contribute in such a way that you improve the situation for graduate students?:ÌýIn my role as Senior Grants Officer, I hope to support fair and accessible distribution of student funds, improve clarity around grant processes, and advocate for policies that reduce financial and structural barriers for graduate students.

Long-Term Career Goals:ÌýMy long-term goal is to become a licensed clinical social worker specializing in disability adjustment counseling, with a focus on systems-level advocacy, accessibility, and inclusive practice within healthcare and social service settings.

Research at 91±¬ÁÏ:ÌýMy academic interests include disability justice at the intersections of race, class, and gender; structural ableism with social service and healthcare systems; and participatory, community-engaged research with disabled-people.Ìý

Involvement in clubs and other organizations:ÌýI serve on the board of MOBALE (Maine Organization for Blind Athletics and Leadership Education), the Guiding Eyes for the Blind Graduate Council, and the School of Social Work curriculum committee’s accessibility subcommittee. I am also involved in outdoor equity efforts through the Nature-Based Education Consortium’s Outdoor Equity Working Group.Ìý

 

Hobbies:ÌýI enjoy spending time outdoors, knitting, learning to play the banjo, and letting my sourdough starter run my life.

Fun facts:ÌýYou can usually find me accompanied by my guide dog, Bright!

Please tell us about your research or some fun facts about you:ÌýI am studying the innate immune response in zebrafish to Candida albicans infection. For a fun fact, my parents are from Trinidad and Tobago and I love playing soccer.

How do you plan on communicating with your constituents?:ÌýI plan to communicate with my constituents during my numerous interactions with them whether during senate meetings, daily interactions with members or at events put together by the GSG.
