The Wilson Center has a new art exhibit on display this semester entitled, “#Uprooted: Some Sense of Home.” This collective community project was coordinated by Maine artist Susan Smith, who was a recipient of a 2016-2017 SCOPE Grant from the Wilson Center.

Inspired by the worldwide immigrant/refugee crisis, in which so many are fleeing their homelands, the exhibit looks at the place we call “home” through the eyes of local community members. Smith distributed mass produced house forms to local schools, colleges, homeless service centers, food banks, nursing homes, and libraries and participants used the basic house structure to create art pieces that showing their interpretation of “home”. The homes on display at The Wilson Center make up a sample of the many pieces that participants have created.

In the fall the exhibit was on display at Waterfall Arts in Belfast. After this spring the exhibit will be on display in additional locations across the state.

Contact The Wilson Center at 866-4227 or wilsoncenterorono@gmail.com to schedule a time to view the exhibit.

The topic for the 2018 Dorothy Clarke Wilson Peace Writing Prize has been announced by The Wilson Center. The year 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the assassinationof Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., which is an appropriate time to reflect on his legacy.Applicants are asked to reflect on the following quote, taken from the speech Dr. King gave the night before his death:

“All we say to America is, ‘Be true to what you said on paper.’ If I lived in China or even Russia, or any totalitarian country, maybe I could understand the denial of certain basic First Amendment privileges, because they hadn’t committed themselves to that over there. But somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of the press. Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for right.”

The Wilson Center and the Judaic Studies Program, with a grant from the Jewish Community Endowment Associates, cordially invite you to a free Interfaith Luncheon on Monday, October 2, 2017 at the Wilson Center, 67 College Ave. 11:30am-1pm

TOPIC: “The role of faith in Social Action/Activism”

Presenters:

Dina Yacoubagha is a member of the Islamic Center of Maine and is the head of the education committee. Dina is a candidate for the Masters in social work. She has been active with Food AND Medicine, and Faith Linking in Action. Dina is also a board member at the Wilson Center. She has recently joined Partners for Peace, working on her advanced placement. Dina is interested in working with and empowering women.

Gerry Gross is Social Action Chair of Congregation Beth El, the reform synagogue in Bangor. Gerry has long been concerned about the environment and social justice. Environmental justice is inextricably tied to social justice as revealed by the impacts of degraded environments, droughts, and violent storms on society’s most vulnerable people. Jewish texts deal extensively with the issues of how we care for our planet and for each other.

John Hennessy is the Director of the Maine Episcopal Network for Justice. He has worked on progressive public policy issues for 16 years. The network promises to seek and serve Christ in all persons and to strive for justice and peace. As seekers of justice we answer this call through public policy advocacy. It takes us beyond the traditional avenues of charity to the work of justice – changing the systems that necessitate charity.

John Maddaus is chair of the Mission Team at Orono United Methodist Church and has coordinated OUMC’s provision of bimonthly dinners at the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter for the past ten years. John is a member of a Maine-Wabanaki REACH ally group, and of the recently organized campus group Decolonizing the 91 (D.U.M.). He is also a board member at the Wilson Center. John is associate professor emeritus of Education at 91.
