A Rediscovery by Carl Sprinchorn

Forthcoming in Fall 2026

Carl Sprinchorn: A Rediscovery
Edited by Donna M. Cassidy, K. Samantha Sigmon, and Devon Zimmerman

Carl Sprinchorn (1887鈥1971) created art worldwide, but found his deepest inspiration in the Maine woods. Working alongside lumberjacks, trappers, and hunters, Sprinchorn captured their lifestyle in work that his friend Marsden Hartley called 鈥渦tterly new.鈥 Sprinchorn鈥檚 perspective as a gay man and Swedish immigrant shaped his vision. This book gathers over 180 sketches and paintings and accompanies exhibitions at the Bates College Museum of Art and the Ogunquit Museum of American Art in summer and fall 2026, marking a significant reevaluation of his legacy.
